We are pleased to announce this year’s winners of California Sea Grant State Fellowships. These five recent graduates in marine policy and science will spend 9 months working with mentors at resource management agencies in California on projects of relevance to marine resource management

Laura Engeman, who earned a master’s in international environmental policy from Monterey Institute of International Studies, is working at the State Coastal Conservancy for the Ocean Protection Council. She is helping to review and recommend policies and projects for the state to undertake to meet the goals of the California Ocean Protection Act.

Dorian Fougeres, who holds a doctorate in environmental science, policy and management from UC Berkeley, is working at the California Bay-Delta Authority. He is studying how science is incorporated into large-scale public planning and policy, using California’s “Delta Vision” as a case study.

Lisa Krigsman, who holds a master’s in marine biology from San Francisco State University, is working at NOAA’s Marine Protected Area Center in Monterey. She is looking at how people currently use the marine environment and how this use impacts marine ecosystems and subsequently other human users.

Amber Szoboszlai, who holds a master’s in marine biology from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, is building a database for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary that will be used to assess how research and monitoring help protect marine life.

Valerie Termini, who holds a master’s in international environmental policy from Monterey Institute of International Studies, is working in the ocean management program at the California Resources Agency. She has helped draft a white paper on priority ocean topics for the West Coast Governors Agreement on Ocean Health.
